Junot Díaz: When characters are sitting around saying, “You’re not black enough,” we’re talking more about than just blackness. So when my characters are saying, “Oh you’re a dog because you’re Dominican,” I mean, what group doesn’t that apply to? Who’s sitting around and saying, like, name a group you’re dating—oh just white dudes? Who’s sitting around and saying, “Oh white dudes are awesome. They’re just so faithful. Infidelity is just not a problem!”
