The Spin Cycle lyrics

by

Aesop Rock

[Verse 1: Blueprint]
A dollar’s hard to earn, the drama’s hard to kill
Even if you got God, you gotta guard your grill
Times is hard with or without a job, it’s ill
People standing outside like it’s a fire drill
Just a consequence of living in the modern world
Cash rules so people bow to the dollar bill
Might stab you in the back, holler at your girl
They rap about make-believe, package it and call it real
Major labels crying foul, singing nothing sell
Out of touch with the youth, all they do is yell
They say all we do is download, pirate and steal
But twenty bucks for two good songs, they can go to hell
We know it all too well, the fleecing of our pockets
Study what works, copy it, make a profit
Tax us to high hell, pennies to the artist
Whoever American Idol labels as the hottest
It’s all related, pieces start falling in place
The only trait they demonstrate is eagerness to imitate
Like Ford or GM, a similar fate
They like to blame it on the workers when the product doesn’t innovate
Every year a little less is on your dinner plate
Stress make you refi, your house is a piggy bank
Probably pocket change to some rich tycoon
It’s just a spin cycle, we’ll be dry soon, [?] on
[Verse 2: Illogic]
He talks to himself when he’s alone
This seems to be the easiest way to find someone who understands
Learns to realize how he’s grown
Diligently working for the day when he can finally unfold his plans
Getting high for the cycle of it
Walking in place never seemed to be the purpose he was born for
Buried the pain to rise above it
Tired of fighting the burning sensation of screaming that he wants more
Completely illusive, emotionally drained
Couldn’t complain ‘cause he survived a childhood riddled with fear
The day he unraveled the true meaning of his name was the same day he discovered where he was supposed to be and it wasn’t here
Living day to day is the challenge he embraces
Tangled in a mangled mess of mockery and manhood
Retreat is a constant temptation ‘cause he was never taught the process of standing the way a man should
But that’s not an excuse that leaps from his tongue
‘cause choice and change are the only things that defined his destination
Thankful for where he is and comes from
Knows where he’s going but understand it’s hard to be virtuous involving patience
He smiles for the cycle of it
His reflection is something he would usually turn away from before today
But now when the sun shines, he loves it
No longer praying for angels’ tears to spin-cycle insane away
He’s moved on
