Gettin’ In The Way (Live) lyrics

by

Common

[Chorus]
You're getting in the way of what I'm feeling
You're getting in the way of what I'm feeling
You're getting in the way of what I'm feeling
You're getting in the way of what I'm feeling

[Verse 1:]
Sister girl, I know you don't understand
But you going have to understand he's my man now
What you had is gone, our thing is sweet
Our thing is stronger than any lie you can tell on me
He knows my heart and that's the part
Yo roots are dug up so you might as well give up
I see your intentions, you can't handle the truth
He let you go a long time ago now it's time to turn him loose

[Chorus]

[Verse 2:]
Sugar honey girl, fly, fly away
I been a lady up to now, don't know how much more I can take
Queens shouldn't swing (if you know what I mean)
But I'm 'bout to take my earrings off get me some Vaseline
(I'm 'bout to go off in your face girl, you better chill)
And I mean it
(You better back down before you get smacked down, you better chill)
You better go 'head with yourself
(I'm 'bout to go off in your face girl, you better chill)
He's my man and nobody else's
(I'm 'bout to go off in your face girl, you better chill)
[Tempo Change]

[Chorus]

[Verse 1]

[Chorus]

[Outro:]
You're getting in my way
You're getting in my way
You're getting in my way
You're getting in my way

[Spoken:]
When that song came out, I used to go to the radio stations, right, all the time? And I'd be in there and the people would call. And say, um

(mocked high voice)
"I don't understand.... I don't understand. You know, Jill Scott is supposed to be such a positive person."

First off... I never said that. We have this thinking that as soon as we see somebody with a natural, they're automatically positive. C'mon. Some days I am, some days I'm not! Human! Anyway... so, they say...

(mocked high voice)
"I don't understand. She's supposed to be so positive. Why is she talking about fighting another sister in the street? That's just wrong! That's wrong!"

Well... if they had listened to the lyrics in the first place, they wouldn't have any questions. Try to tell a story...
First verse, I come very ladylike: "Sister girl, um, I know you don't understand, but you gon' have to." Second verse, it gets a little more serious: "Sugar. Honey. GIRL." I don't talk about whoopin' nobody's ass 'til the bridge

The song ain't even about whoopin' ass. It's not even about tearing a weave off, for that matter. What the song is about, what the song has always been about... is... principle

I told you once, I told you twice. Third time???

The song is about principle and, I don't know when, I don't know where, not trying to condone violence by any means. But sometimes in life, for principle? You gonna have to kick some ass
